Democratising Design- Interiors for Everyone

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

Often the idea of working with an interior designer is regarded as only for those with money to splurge, or no time or inclination to do it themselves- this needs to change!

Our environment, and the spaces we inhabit within it, undeniably have an impact on the way we feel.

As Alain de Botton wrote: ‘An ugly room can coagulate any loose suspicions as to the incompleteness of life, while a sun-lit one set with honey-coloured limestone tiles can lend support to whatever is most hopeful within us’. (The Architecture of Happiness, 2006)

This is just a tad dramatic perhaps and I don’t believe we are all teetering on the brink of existential crisis, but he definitely has a point. How we move through life- the ease or difficulty with which we perform the minute tasks that make up our days, and the appeasement or assault of our senses in the process, has a cumulative effect upon us for better or worse.

If you can’t see yourself spending thousands of pounds for a person to come to your home with an armful of swatch books to discuss handmade bespoke furniture, you are not alone. I feel exactly the same way.

But you want your home to be beautiful, functional and a reflection of who you are and what you want from life! I believe this is something everyone deserves but surprisingly few people actually have…

There can be so many reasons for this, often I meet people who have put the time and money in to their home but have never hit upon the right solution to their needs eg. storage, or how to inject some personality, and they discover a couple of months later that they aren’t happy with the result and will spend more time and money again- and so it continues.

There is an old adage ‘pay cheap, buy twice’ but with the home it is not about the amount that you spend, rather how smartly you spend it. By getting it right the first time, you save the time, money, carbon footprint and stress of all the other ill advised attempts. With a fresh pair of eyes on your space, and the time and expertise dedicated to achieving your aims you can get out of this cycle and have a beautiful home that works for you.
